What to look for in lochs, rivers and wetlands


Osprey are not often seen far from water. From below they have white or mottled underparts and long narrow wings. They arrive back in the Cairngorms from West Africa in late March and April and stay until August and September.

The dipper is a short-tailed, dumpy bird often seen bobbing up and down on a rock mid-stream. Incredibly it completely submerges and walks along the bottom of the river looking for food

In winter the whole of the UK is inundated with birds from Scandinavia. However in summer, the Cairngorms is the only place goldeneye breed, largely thanks to the many nestboxes that have been put up along rivers.
